MMM and the Second Amendment

By Gretchen Hemmer-Beaumont

I’m a little bit angry with the Million Mom Marchers right now.  When my Mother and I marched with them on Mother’s Day I heard a lot of great speeches and inspiring stories.  Most of these were tragic stories of children being shot from either gun violence or gun carelessness.  Now they are getting opportunistic and cheap.  I just got my latest e-mail newsletter from my local chapter and it disgusted me.  They are using the sniper to promote their cause.  We don’t know the reason for these shootings.  The bodies of the people shot are barely cold.  People in my area are living in terror.  This guy is using a rifle.  I don’t want to outlaw rifles.  I want to outlaw wackos.  I know that sounds a lot like “there are no bad guns-just bad people”.  It’s hard for me when I see it that way.  But it’s harder still to have the MMMers send me a form letter about what I should say to my congressperson or President in the light of  the present tragedies.  A rifle is a hunting weapon.   Farming and hunting by responsible people are some of the reasons we were able to become independent from Great Britain.  Hunters who subsistence lived created this country.  That’s an amazing feat.  Also, I’m a little worried about taking all guns away from all Americans.  I support the second amendment.  What would happen if this country kept moving further and further toward the Theocracy it seems to be leaning toward right now?  I want to have the ability as an American and a woman to be able to overthrow my oppressors.  I consider myself a responsible citizen.  The Million Mom March said that they supported common sense gun laws.  From all of the literature I’m getting it seems that they think that means “no guns”.
