Hohensalzburg Fortress
Some notes about the Fortress: First begun in 1077, it was added upon by each Archbishop of Salzburg. Over a period of over 600 years, the Fortress went through many changes, but it has always been the symbol and chief protection of the city of Salzburg. Placed at the top of a large mountain, tourists have the option of taking a Funicular to the entrance. Unfortunately, when we were there, the lift was broken, so we had to walk. Part of my diary entry for this portion of our trip would read: "Day Two, carried Henry up to the castle."

Half of the castle is off limits to visitors because they are apartments! The government allows local artists to petition to live, rent free, in the fortress. How I wish I had some talent...and that I was Austrian.
