St. Virgil's & St. Rupert's Church

This is one of the larger churches we saw during our travels and the second dedicated to St. Virgil.  There are three dates on the entrance grills:  774 is the year that the Abbot and Bishop Virgil, who came from Ireland, consecrated the first cathedral.  1628was the year that much of the cathedral was demolished after a fire.  Archbishop Markus Sittikus began the rebuilding and it was consecrated on September 25, 1628.  On October 16, 1944, an aerial bomb destroyed the cathedral dome.  Archbishop Andreas Rohracher directed the rebuilding of the dome and the cathedral was reopened on May 1, 1959.
